A folderless notebook for engineers

Fast capture in the terminal. Spatial discovery on the web.

Orbgem is a hosted notebook for engineers and SREs: log a line from your shell, let it link itself to what you already know, and find it again on a timeline, a graph or a canvas.

Features

Built for the middle of an incident

Everything in Orbgem is a Markdown note: daily logs, templates, canvas boards, even the manual. There are no folders. Structure comes from links, aliases and properties.

  • Capture without leaving the shell

orb "text" appends a line to today's daily note in your hosted vault. orb_last saves the command you just ran as a code block.

  • Links that suggest themselves

As you type, Orbgem matches whole words against note titles and aliases and offers the link. One click turns k8s into [[Kubernetes|k8s]].

  • Three places, one set of notes

The timeline is a chronological feed with a capture box. The graph shows notes as capsules and links as wires. The canvas is an infinite board for laying out an incident.

  • Commands you fill in, not retype

A code block with placeholders like <NAMESPACE> renders fill-in fields. Copy gives you the finished command, not the template.

  • Scan Mode for the long incident log

Press Alt S (Option S on a Mac) and everything disappears except bold text, highlights and open tasks. You read what you marked as mattering.

  • Plain Markdown, yours to take

Notes are stored as the exact Markdown text you wrote. One click exports the whole vault as a .zip of .md files that open unchanged in Obsidian or any editor.

Omnibar⌘K
Jump to any note without reaching for the mouse.
Backlinks inspector
Open a note and see its properties and every note that links to it.
Deep links
Every view and selection is an address, such as #graph?file=…, that you can paste into a ticket.

How it flows

Write first. The structure shows up afterwards.

  1. 01

    Capture

Something happens. You write one line from the terminal you are already in, or from the capture box on the timeline.

    $ orb "auth-service 502s after the k8s drain"

  2. 02

    It links itself

Orbgem recognises the notes you mentioned by title or alias and offers each link. Nothing to file, no folder to pick.

    + [[Auth Service]] · + [[Kubernetes]]

  3. 03

    Find it in the graph

Next month the line is still wired to everything it touched. Open the note, read its backlinks, and paste the address into the ticket.

    orbgem.com/#graph?file=auth-service.md
